Semana 10
Hola a todos, ¿cómo andan?
I've left San Vicente for a few days to go to Puerto Rico for a Zone Conference! Not the Puerto Rico the country, (unfortunately), just another small city in our province called Puerto Rico
Here's my highlights from the week:
When Elder Packer and I came back to our apartment Tuesday night, we were surprised to find a huge dog chilling outside the front door. We were worried at first, because the dogs here can be pretty aggressive (and this one probably could've eaten me) but luckily he was super friendly and just wanted some head pats. Now he comes back every night and sits outside our door waiting for us to come home
I learned a new game this week that all the kids play here! It's where one kid stands facing a wall, and another kid stands 3 feet away and kicks a soccer ball at their head as hard as they can. If you get hit in the head you have to play again. I was invited to join in after watching a few rounds, to which I politely declined
Time to give the rundown on the most important cultural keystone in all of Argentina: Mate. (pronounced Mah tay) Mate is a drink that's made from Yerba that has been crushed, cut up, and smoked for an extended period of time. It's then poured into a vase-looking cup (also confusingly called a Mate), where you pour hot water in. Then, you drink out of a metal straw called a Bombilla, that has a filter at the end to make sure you're not drinking leaves. What does it taste like, you might ask? In my opinion, lawn clippings with hot water. However, it's about two times as big here as coffee is in America, so you'd think it would be absolutely amazing. I am starting to enjoy it more as time goes on, though
On Saturday night I ate one of the most amazing foods known to man: The Hamburpizza. Here's how this beast is made:
-Pizza on the bottom
-Two layers of eggs
-One layer of ham
-Two layers of hamburger patty
-Pizza on the top
It was about as amazing as it sounds. The whole thing weighs about 3 lbs all together, and I managed to put down 3/4's of it in one night. The perfect reward for a full week of hard work
One night Elder Packer and I were teaching La Familia Batista when it started to rain a little bit. Then after a few minutes, it started to pour, and I learned how loud an Argentinian Thunderstorm sounds on a tin roof. Lesson 2 is a lot more fun to teach when you're yelling over the rain
I have woken up twice this week covered in dust, courtesy of the termites that live in our ceiling
My favorite thing that I've learned about the Argentine people so far is that they value family over EVERYTHING! When we teach lessons, we always focus on how our message can bless families. And when we tell people about how families can be together forever through the Plan of Salvation, the room lights up. It's amazing!!
We found a lot more success this week, with a lot of great lessons focused on the Savior! I'm loving it down here in Argentina, let me know how you guys are all doing!!
Cuernos Abajo,
Elder Johnson
